Monday... Where did you go?

Today felt like it raced by... It was so fast.
Went to Math at 7:45 and sat next to my friend, Martin. He's like a college version of Brevin. I like talking to him. After I went back home and ate some food and did a bit of homework.
Humanities was interesting. We learned about the history of Greece and all the cool stuff that happened.
Choir we sang and sang and sang. We're sounding really good and we get to sing the Spirit of God at one of devotionals in the near future. Fun fun :) In choir someone shared a very funny quote. "A singer must have the mind of a poet, the body of an athlete, and the face of an idiot." :)
Group Vocal Lessons was the usual. More and more singing. We learned about expression today.
After I ran home to get my sheet music and then went to voice lab. I'm in a group with three boys. It's a lot of fun. Sister Olsen said I was doing really good and she could pick me out most of the time :) and these boys are loud...
Then Monday's classes were FINALLY over. I went over to Carly's and ate some of her Asian food. It's soooo good. I'm gonna have to get the recipe for it. I went with Carly and Elise to the grocery store and they got some stuff to eat and then we ran over to the Quick Ship N Copy. My humanities professor, Brother Peck, is writing our textbook while we're in class. Apparently none of the other texts he researched were good enough so he decided to write his own. Anyways, every week or so he'll send out an email saying go pick up the next chapter. So that's what I did today.
I came back home and jumped into my Book of Mormon homework. It's mostly just busy work... But it has a bunch of great quotes in it. I liked this one...

After I finished the homework, we went to FHE. It was at the boys apartment this week and it was a lot of fun. We played feather volleyball. Paige and I were on a team first and we crushed Trevor and Jared. Basically you have a feather and you try to blow it over the net... and you can't let it touch the ground. 

After FHE, we all came home and now we're all just sitting here doing homework, making food, or getting ready for tomorrow. Ok... gotta get off the computer now. Goodnight!

Week #3

This week was fun.
If you want to read about the beginning of the week then go look at my old posts :)
The last day I talked about was Wednesday. So Thursday was fairly uneventful. I went to class and did some homework. Thursdays are really nice because I only have 2 one-hour classes :) I actually get a lot done on these days.
Friday was a lot of fun. I went to class and afterwards, my mom's friend came over to pick me up. She wanted me to babysit her little boy. His name is Isaiah and he's four months old. He has down syndrome and he's the sweetest little man ever. I watched him for 3-ish hours.
After that I came home and did some more homework. My friend, Carly, came over and we went to Porter Park. It was at least 80 degrees outside and we decided to go play in the fountain. We were the only ones there and everyone that walked by gave us funny looks but we didn't care. We were being all giddy and acting like little kids :)
Afterwards we came back home and Carly went to her apartment and I went to mine. I ate some food and then decided to watch a movie. A couple minutes after I started it Carly texted me that there were about a billion people in her apartment and she came over to watch with me.
We watched it and it was really funny because it was a thriller and we were both like "This is the perfect movie to watch with boys... Why are we not watching it with boys?!" It was hilarious.
After the movie, Julie texted me asking if we were still gonna go see Spider man. Of course the answer was yes. So Julie, Carly and I had a girls night out and went and saw The Amazing Spider man for $3 :)
Julie decided to go home after and so Carly and I went back to my place and ate oreos and watched another movie. Around midnight we decided to turn it off and she went home.
Saturday I did almost all of my homework. I did some laundry and Carly and I went grocery shopping. I got everything I needed and then we decided to watch another movie (shocker...)
We watched Miss Congeniality and The Lucky One. It was a lot of fun.
Sunday was today. We woke up to the power being halfway out! It was crazy! And then around 11:15, the rest of the power went out... What. The. Heck.
It was funny because when it went out we heard the girls next door who were showering scream :) hehehe
We went to church with the hopes that when we got back it would be back on. No such luck.
It didn't turn completely back on until 5:30-ish... But that was ok because when we got home it was halfway back on.
So now I'm sitting here writing this. I did my nails today haha that's how bored I was. They are now light blue (kinda minty) and I tried out the silver crackle stuff... It's pretty cool looking actually :)

What a Wonderful Wednesday :)

Ok so Wednesday is definitely my most stressful/busiest day of the week.... Why wouldn't it be? I have five classes and my last one is science which ends at 9:30 pm....
So this morning I woke up 15 minutes early cuz Joelle was going to attempt to curl my stick straight hair.
She did an amazing job actually. The only problem is my stupid hair hates being curled. It'll hold it for about 3 hours before it starts to go back to normal.
So it looked amazing for math.... and then I walked home....
Math went by super fast today. I understood everything that we talked about and I felt like a freaking genius (which doesn't usually happen for me in the math department).
When I got home, I finished the homework that I was supposed to have done for Humanities and then headed off to that loverly class.
We talked about the humanities of Egypt and looked at a bunch of cool pictures. Something interesting I learned today? In murals inside the Pharaoh's tombs they have paintings of their different Gods. Osiris (god of the underworld) is always painted with green skin. Isis (his wife and sister) always wears a headdress with a sun in between two bull horns. And finally their son, Horus, is the one with the hawk head. Just so you know :)
After that I went to choir. It's pretty amazing that I have my two favorite classes right after each other. We sang a whooooole bunch :) but that's what you do in choir. I made a new friend named, Scotty. He's kind of like a Mormon Brenden Knight for those of you who know Brenden Knight. He's a cool guy :)
Group Vocal Instruction is right after that. This class is okay... Not my favorite but it has it's fun moments.
Then it was time to go home and eat lunch and do some homework and all that fun stuff.
I got an amazing package from my friend, Mikala Dent at home. It had all my favorite snacks in it and some silly string! It made me sooooo happy.
Around 7:15 I headed off for my last class of the day. Science.
When I got there I plopped down in my seat and then the teacher passed out little bowls with three little termites in them... ooook what the heck are we doing?
We had to do two "experiments".
The first was a quantitative one with the termites. We basically herded them around this piece of paper. They love the smell of blue ball point ink. They followed wherever we drew with the pen. It was kind of funny.
The second was a qualitative. We thumb wrestled! We measured our thumbs and forearms and all these other crazy things. And then we had to thumb wrestle. It was fun :)
When Brother Pettit asked us why we did this the funniest answer came from a guy who looks just like Squints from the Sandlot. He said we collected this information so we can figure out the best qualities for a successful thumb wrestler and so we can take that info and create a genetically enhanced thumb wrestler. hahaha it was super funny.
Best thing about that class was that we ran out of things to do so we got out 15 minutes early :D It was AWESOME.
On my way home I checked the mail and I found a lovely surprise. The sheet music I asked my mom to send me had arrived. YAY! So tomorrow when I go with Joelle to the piano room in the lounge I'll have a little piece of home to take with me :D
ok ok ok. Done with today. It was a super good day (best i've had at college yet) and I'm really happy :)

Tuesday.... Almost Blissful

Tuesdays and Thursdays are my calmest days. Only two classes. It's so nice :)
The reason Tuesdays are better though is because of Devotional. This week it was by Elder Gary Coleman.
He's a general authority (I can't remember what he is).
So started off the day bright and early with Book of Mormon. I really like that class. My teacher is a nice guy who loves to tell funny stories.
Then, about an hour after, is Music Explorations. This is a class specifically designed for potential music majors. It's there to help kids figure out what they're going to do and prepare for the upcoming semesters. It's a very helpful class.
Finally! Done Done Done. Then it was time for homework :P I swear it never ends. But that's okay. At least I get it done.
At 2 we went to devotional in the I-Center. The lesson was on the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon. Elder Coleman is a convert to the Church and he told us about his story and then talked about all the invitations that are in the wonderful book. It says "Come unto Christ" at least a dozen times in there. I think that makes it pretty clear what we're supposed to do.
After devotional, I decided to take a nap. It was glorious :) I really should do that more often.
We had a meeting with the Carriage House managers. They're really nice and they told us to focus on three things living here: Love, Shared Responsibility, and Mutual Respect. They said if you learn this living here then you will be able to get along with anyone you live with.
When I checked the mail today (I'm kind of obsessed with checking. I do it everyday :)) I found one of my textbooks that I ordered and a key to a bigger mailbox.... I had no idea where this mailbox was. So Joelle and I went on an adventure. We went to the post office to see if it was there (it wasn't). So we came back to our place and we found out that the bigger mailboxes were right across from the little ones... Oh well :) At least we know what to do now and Joelle knows where the post office is. Inside the big mail box was the textbook that Mom and I ordered that we thought was lost because we addressed it wrong.
Turns out that I don't even need that book... We got it for like $.99 though and it's a hard back. It's actually not even a textbook. Just a book full of science stuff... Lots of pretty pictures too. I think I'll keep it. Might come in handy for something. Ok well going to bed now. Joelle's gonna try curling my hair tomorrow morning :)

Monday! Monday! Monday! Monster Truck Rally.....

hahaha no it's not a monster truck rally :) I was just feeling like quoting Night of the Museum.
So today was fun.
Went to classes. We're starting budgeting in Math.... It's interesting actually going to a math class that I can use.... I'm definitely not used to it.
After that was Music and the Humanities. Still one of my favorite classes. We compared Egypt and Mesopotamia today. Egypt was all around better because the geography protected them and their religion and government were basically one system (Theocracy). I love learning about this stuff.
Then choir! I love choir :) So much lovely singing. There must be 200 kids in there. We're singing Christmas music to get ready for our Christmas program.
After that is Group Vocal Instruction which is actually nice because then I'm all warmed up from choir. I had to sing a solo today which wasn't too bad :) I sang Be Thou Humble.
Then I went home and did some homework, ate some food, the usual :)
We had FHE at 7. My FHE brothers are hilarious. We played a name game which involved hitting each other on the head with a newspaper haha We won't be forgetting anyone's names any time soon.
At 8:30, Paige and I went to the upper fields to play soccer. It was Paige, me, two other girls, and the rest were guys. It was so fun :) I forgot how much fun it is to play. According to one of the guys I was a "brick wall" haha YES! I've still got it :)

Week Numbah 2

Oooook so it's been a couple of days since I've written but that's ok! I'm going to go over the whoooole week.
So Monday was the first day of class (feels like years ago). The went well and it was fun and I liked my classes.
Tuesday I had something nasty happen to my eyeball and I missed class but I went to the doctor's and got some drugs for it and by that night it was almost perfect.
Wednesday: I dropped a couple of classes and signed up for a couple of classes and got it all figured out :) oh! and that was my craziest day this week.
Thursday: Two classes only (so nice after having a whole day of FIVE classes) got bunches of stuff done.

Friday: Went to three classes and then came home. Homework was worked on and then that night, Samantha, Bo, Cody, Carole, Matt, and I went to a block party... It was INSANE but fun :) We only stayed for about a half hour and then decided to walk around campus for a bit. We went to Porter Park and tried star-tripping. Then we found out (the hard way) that there's a miniature water park over there.... hahaha it was super funny. Then my friend, James and his roomie, Jace showed up and we started an epic game of Lava Monster on the play-structure. It was soooo fun. We played until about 10:30 and then decided to go home.
Saturday! Finally! No classes... Sleep in until 10.... Stay in my jammies until 2 :) so nice haha Got a bunch of homework done and the rest of my laundry. Got dressed and then we went grocery shopping. Only spent $18 on groceries (ohhh yeah :)) Paige had a hot date to go on so Joelle and I went for a walk... Down to Broulims... to buy Nutella :D I'm really not supposed to buy that stuff... it goes by so fast. Then we took a little stop at Jamba Juice for a treat... We made it through the first week and we deserved it.
Then we walked back home and I made her say "Hi" to every guy we passed. It was fun.
When we got home Sidney was there. She was gonna go over to Mountain Crest where some of the guys in our ward live.
Joelle went with her and I decided to stay home and do some homework. Paige got home and when I told her where everyone was she said "Lets go" and so we did.
They were watching the Adjustment Bureau when we walked in so we got to see the last half hour of it and then all the other girls left and it was us four (me, Paige, Joelle, and Sidney) and seven guys. It was a lot of fun. We ran home cuz it was so cold and decided to watch Clue the Movie.
Today was Sunday and we went to church. It was fun and then we came home for about two hour. A couple of our FHE brother (Matt and Jordan) came over because they got locked out of their apartment (haha!) and we talked to them until we left for the fireside. It was a stake one so there were a bunch of people and it was a good one. My favorite thing they said was a quote from Elder Ballard, "All the easy things have been done. It's high adventure until the second coming."
So Kayleigh and I walked home and decided to make brownie so we did. And now I'm writing this.... In about a half hour we're gonna go stadium singing! :D I'm super excited haha

Daaaaay 3 :)

Ok... Today was WAAAAAY better than yesterday.
I actually left the apartment... :) haha
Math was at 7:45 and it went by really fast. The craziness of it was the my teacher walked in wearing an "In-Motion" dance team jacket (they're the LDS dance team around my neck of the woods). Kinda surprised me but it was nice to see something so familiar even though it was on my teacher.
After that I had about an hour break so my and my friend Joelle went back to our place, had a snack, and did some homework.
10:00 rolled around and I practically ran to Music and the Humanities. It was a lot of fun today. Even more fun since I had actually done the homework and knew what Brother Peck was talking about. That class went by fast too.
Then it was time for choir! :) I forgot how much I love choir. Seriously it's the best. We sang a bunch and the teacher in that class, Sister Ashby, is really cool. Waaaay better than the choir teacher from my high school that I had last year. The TA played a recording for us of a song that we're singing and it gave me chills... It's gonna be totally wicked! I'm super excited in case you couldn't tell :)
Group Vocal Instruction was right after that. This class is interesting. Sister Olsen is the teacher and she's funny old lady :) She wants us to think that she's 35 hahaha it was fun today.
I finally got to go home after that and ate some mac 'n cheese :) did some homework and got ready for the last class of the day.
Now this one, I had never been to before. It's my science class and it's only once a week. Wednesdays from 7:30-9:30.... kind of a sucky time for a class but whatever. My teacher is Brother Pettit and he is a huge nerd. He spent the whole first hour talking to us about bats and then for the second hour we watched a general conference talk but Richard G. Scott.... It's so interesting how there isn't a separation of church and state here. We say prayers at the beginning of every class and there's always connections to the gospel. I like it a lot. It's such a unique experience that you can't get anywhere else.
Ok well not that I've told you about my day I'm going to go to bed. Another busy day tomorrow.

P.S. my eye is a billion times better :) thank goodness for doctors. Mine even called me up to check on me today. What a nice guy :)

Day 2 (Why me?)

Today was a weird day.
I woke up this morning and my right eye was swollen shut. I seriously couldn't open it at all. This had happened once before a couple of weeks ago.
I called my mom and asked her what to do. She said that I had pink eye and that I could use the over the counter stuff that we had bought when this had happened before but that I should probably go to the doctor's office here on campus.
I called them and made an appointment and then decided to go back to sleep for a while until the appointment. I was NOT going to go to class with one eye swollen shut. Not only was it very painful but it couldn't see out of it. I literally felt handicapped.
11:00 rolled around and I got up and got dressed... I had a 15 minute walk all the way across campus... Ever wanted to be invisible? I definitely did today.
I left the apartment and walked very quickly to the office, hoping and praying all the way there that I wouldn't run into anyone I knew.
I got there and checked in. A couple of minutes late I got called into the back and the doctor came in to check my eyeball out. He asked if I wore contacts and if I had a cold. Yes to the first, no to the second.
He pried open my swollen eye and made me look at a very bright light (Yowch! No thank you) and then told me that it was infected but it might be something a bit more.
He said that sometimes contacts can cut off the oxygen supple to a cornea and that's what they had seemed to do to my eye. He said no contacts for a while and gave me a prescription for some antibiotic drops. I got them from the pharmacy and then I had the 15 minute (seemed like eternity) march home.
Luckily, I didn't run into anyone as I hurried home.
When I got to my place, I emailed my teachers apologizing for not being in class and explaining the situation. I got my homework done and that's pretty much all I did all day today. It was not the most exciting day and hopefully I won't have another one like it anytime soon.
The antibiotics worked very well and my eye isn't as swollen anymore (just a little bit) and it's still a bit pink but at least it's not bright red like it was earlier.
So classes tomorrow (FIVE of them!) and it should be fun.

Day 1 on the Alien Planet

So today was my first day of class.... And it was interesting.
First on the schedule was Math.... I'm taking a foundations math class because that's all that I need to do to graduate....
I walked into my class and the only chair open was one right smack in the middle of the front row. Well at least I knew I wasn't going to fall asleep. Plopped down in the chair and then the teacher walked in. She looked a lot like one of the science substitutes from Aloha but I knew she wasn't. And then she started talking and she said she was from Woodburn, Oregon. YAY! :D I was actually really happy to hear that. Class went by fairly quickly and we went over syllabus and stuff like that (typical first day of class).
8:45 rolled around and it was time for the next class.
This one was called Basic Musicianship (Music 171) and was all the way across campus... It started at 9:00. I was feeling a little stressed because I didn't know where it would be in the Snow building... I got there about a minute early and then class began. The first thing I heard when I walked through the door was the lovely sound of the VonTrapp family singers. Hahah the class is basically about solfege and it was going to be very interesting.
After that one I went to Music and the Humanities. This one seems to be exactly like AP Euro but with music incorporated into it. I loved AP Euro so, needless to say. this class is going to be AWESOME. I'm super excited. The teacher is very cool too. He's funny.
After this I went home because I had about an hour before I had the class I was going to walk into. I ate some lunch super fast (pasta and alfredo sauce) and then headed out the door.
Music 104... Group Vocal Instruction. I was on the waiting list for this class... No idea if I was going to get in. I went anyways and it was a lot of fun. The teacher, Sister Olsen, is a funny old lady that reminds my of my Grandma Joi. She's quirky and sarcastic.
I went home when all of that was done and tried, once again, to drop Music 155 which I was replacing with Music 104. It wouldn't let me so I called my friend, Julie Buss and she came over to help me. This was when we found out the bad news... I had to drop Music 171 if I was going to drop Music 155... ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!
I had to drop TWO classes?!
That's insane! Well I went into the office and a girl in there helped me out a bit. She helped me find a replacement class and everything seems to have worked out. I am now taking Music 104 instead of Music 155 and Music 312 instead of Music 171. And I am perfectly okay with it. Music 312 is the university choir and the amazing Sister Eda Ashby let me get into it (it was a closed class). YAY for amazing Mormon people :)
Ok well tomorrow morning I have Book of Mormon class at 7:45 so I should probably go to bed.... Goodnight!

Maybe not...

So I was sitting in church today and I learned a lot. I told Mom that I was going to change my major and she told me how she felt about that. Basically she said that I was taking the easy way out. I was feeling really discouraged about being in music and doubting my talents and skills.

Today in sacrament meeting the bishopric spoke and I felt very strongly that I needed to stay with my major. It's going to be a long, hard road but I need to stick with it.

The main thing I learned in Sunday School was that we need to constantly improve ourselves. In Relief Society, we talked about faith. They did a couple of trust falls which was quite funny. But one of the girls described how we can apply this to our lives. She said that we are constantly having to do trust falls with our Heavenly Father. He is always there but we can't see him. We might get scraped up on the way down but He will always catch us before we hit the ground.

"If God can bring you to it, He can bring you through it." My roomie, Paige, said this during the lesson and the Relief Society president backed it up with Proverbs 3:5-6. "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." This was exactly what I needed to hear.

So I'm keeping my major. End of story. I'm going to turn this semester over to my Father and hopefully, He'll help me accomplish everything I need to do.

George Albert Smith said, "It is this principle [faith]... that points us heavenward, that gives us hope in the battle of life. When we become confused, and find ourselves confronted by obstacles we, seemingly, cannot overcome, having faith in the Redeemer of the world, we can go to Him and know that our prayers will be answered for our good."

He also said, "Give the Lord a chance... The Lord has a way of accomplishing things that we are unable to do, and never asks us to do anything that he does not make the way possible."

Oh the amazing-ness of being worthy to receive revelation in Relief Society. Haha I am so grateful to be a member of this church and to have the opportunity to receive things from my Heavenly Father that He would want me to know.

Week 1

So this is my explanation (?) of what happened my first week out here for college.
I was basically by myself from Monday-Wednesday. Everyone showed up on Thursday and I was so excited to see them. It gets kind of boring here when you're on your own. Thursday was hanging out with everyone on the I-Team. It was a lot of fun and I'm with a cool bunch of people. Get Connected is a three day thing for freshmen and it's a lot like EFY. There was a devotional-like thing where President Clark spoke to us. It was really cool. Thursday night there was a game night. My team is obsessed with missionary tag. We must have played it four times in one night. The MC would tell us to move to a new area and we'd just start the game back up again.

Friday was the academic day. We left the apartment at 8:30 in the morning and went to academic connections. We went to the "college" of our major. There were six colleges: Agriculture and Life Sciences, Business and Communication, Education and Human Development, Language and Letters, Performing and Visual Arts, and Physical Sciences and Engineering. I went to the Performing and Visual Arts one. It was very interesting and I realized that I might not want to be a music major after all. There's not much you can do with one. So I decided that I'm going to try for an English major with a music minor. There's two things that I love and are passionate about.

This complicates things a bit... Because that means that I have to rethink some things. I'm going to go talk to someone in the Language and Letters office on Monday. We'll see what I need to get done but I might just have to play out this semester.

After this I made this discovery, we went to the gym in the I-Center and had a freshman BBQ. It was really yummy. Then we went to a "Getting Involved" meeting. They told us all about these fun groups you can join and stuff like that.

That night, my friend Zach (who served a mission in Brazil) had a potluck kind of thing at his place. It was surprisingly good. My friend Joelle and I went and met a whole bunch of people. The best thing about college is that it isn't high school. There aren't any cliques and everyone's equal :)

After that we went back to our place and headed over to Elise's. We made brownies and chilled until it was time for the talent show. We went to the talent show together and it was really fun. There are so many people here who can do cool things.

Our group was having a game night after but we didn't wanna go so we snuck into Elise's place, made kettle corn, ate the brownies, and watched some movies. It was super fun :)

Saturday was pretty much a free day. I got to hang out with my friends and then have some time all by myself to get some things figured out. I got my TB shot tested and guess what? I don't have it. I could have told them that... but whatever. Saturday night was the I-Night and that was a campus-wide party. There was a dance and stand up comedians and a bunch of inflatables that you could play on. It was pretty chaotic :)

Now today... going to church at 1 in the Romney building. It's gonna be fun and we get to meet our ward.
So that was my week so far. Can't wait to see what the next one holds.

Look What I found!

College Life! :D

Ok so I know that I've only been here for a couple of days and that I'm not even in classes yet but I feel like talking about life right now :)

BYU-I Campus :)

So College... I never pictured myself actually getting here. I mean when you're in high school it doesn't feel like you'll ever get out of that place. Gonna be stuck in high school for the rest of your life!
But the senior year goes by sooooo fast. It was kind of crazy for me.
So that's one good thing.

Biggest tip ever... If you're paying for college yourself, work your butt off the summer before you leave. I know it's a no-brainer.... but I'm actually kind of glad that I had to give up my social life this summer. It was still fun and there were definitely some memorable experiences but I'm so grateful for the money.

Oh and when you get to college... even if you're not going to a church one (heaven forbid that you don't)... Say your prayers and read your scriptures. And don't just read them. Dive into them. Strap on your swimsuit and go for it :) It's pretty awesome and you'll get little love notes from your Heavenly Father where you least expect them to be :)

So that's what I've learned so far... I've only been here for two days. Also you should know that college is scary but fear means that you're growing. And it's so nice to be on your own haha
